Thanks for helping highlight one of the grand hypocrisies of the film industry. While many leading actors & actresses use their fame to promote other social and political views, few offer criticism of the national health problem of smoking. In an age of greater health awareness I see way too many people and teens smoking. At a time when littering is universally frowned upon, smokers are the last ones left to litter our streets. Check the numbers, what drags down our healthcare system more; "frivolous lawsuits"; or smoking related health problems?

Smoking Kills. Spread the word. Ireland was the first country in Europe to become a smoke free zone and I built this site to help people to quit smoking. http://www.helpforsmokers.com

Posted by: Steven Newman on 12/18/04
It's about time someone called attention to smoking in movies. Actors in film are much more likely to smoke than the general population, and this needs to end. The drug-pushing on our children must stop.

Posted by: Barb Rowley on 12/20/04
I'm glad this website has been started. I remember watching "My best friend's wedding" where Julia Roberts smoked almost constantly. Now Julia Roberts commands a fee of about 20 million per film, and must have some influence. Couldn't she have said she wouldn't smoke for the part. It was disgusting to watch her smoke throughout the film. The other one who smoked constantly was Sarah Jessica Parker in Sex and the City. Again totally unnecessary. Why is Hollywood so behind on this. I know very few people who smoke any more, and no-one would dream of smoking in my house. I only go to non-smoking restaurants. Obviously the tobacco companies must be paying large amounts of money to have their products placed in films - it's the only reason I can think of why they would keep pushing smoking in our faces when most people have quit. Keep lobbying the filmakers !!!!

Posted by: Cliff on 12/20/04
I think it is obvious that the tobacco industry pays film makers exhorbitant sums for tobacco placement in films as an effective form of advertising. This speaks volumes about the woeful lack of social concience of both industries, including most popular film stars of our day.

hi I'm 11.Ilove this site.I think it's a great role model for other people, includin the ones who smoke and chew tobacco!

Posted by: Kathleen on 01/04/05
Thank you for this website. I've always disliked and resented movies with characters puffing away. I don't like to be around or see people who smoke in real life and I certainly don't want to pay money to see smoking. And now that I have a beautiful, innocent child it is my job to keep her from even seeing smoking and certainly not having it glorified in movies. This is such an obvious advertising ploy by the tobacco companies. I resent it and I will boycott movies which I know smoking occurs. Geez, it's bad enough we have to see advertiser's products such as coke, pepsi, dog food, junk food, etc. in movies. Why should we have to endure 'commercials' for cigarettes also? That's a shame about John Travolta smoking - love him, but will not see the movie because of the smoking.

Posted by: Stacie Capt on 01/05/05
I was so glad to find your site. Last year I did a piece at my theatre school regarding the need for smoking to be banned from movies. No actor worth his/her salt would need a cigarette to create a character, and the studios should stop asking them to do so. Thanks for the hard work!

Posted by: Alexa on 01/15/05
Smoking in movies should make the film rated-R. It's stupid to even put smoking in movies. Come on people there are little kids watching your movies.Hugs instead of drugs!

Posted by: Charlet on 01/17/05
It's sad to see children's movies with tobacco use. It shows a lack of creativity in American cinema. What are we teaching the future of America, that smoking kills but its ok? That's ridiculous, we need to stop misleading youth; the tobacco companies do that enough without Hollywood’s help.

I'm all for the R rating with tobacco use. After all, in most states, you can't buy tobacco unless you're 18, so its use must be limited to adult movies as well. A minor can buy condoms at any age but can't watch a movie portraying sex without an adult. But tobacco use is portrayed in any movie rating when minors can't buy tobacco (which is appropriate). What's wrong with this picture???

My wife and I have noticed a sharp increase in the number of movie stars lighting up in movies lately. We assume it is due to heavy revenue from the tobacco corporations. Nothing ruins a scene for us more than seeing a character smoking.

My 34 year old son is a smoker and I am just beginning to understand what encouraged him to pick up the habit. It is because he was and still is a big movie goer. I am a nurse and have seen way too many people suffer the consequences of cigarette smoke and premature death.

Posted by: upset on 08/24/05
i lost my dad to smoking but i don't blame anyone! not the companies, movies, anything! I just live with it i learned to live with his death and i don't regret any of his decisions. that was his choice and although it killed him, it never has bothered me. So why don't you stop crying and move on. Life goes on after death! it is their choice not yours. If you smoke you smoke. deal with it! If i child wants to smoke because of a movie than they should just smoke if their brains are molded that easily! Plain and simple! Weed out the strong from the weak minded.

I think we need to address the root cause of the issue - tobacco companies arepaying studios huge sums of money for this powerful form of advertising. Is there anyway to expose this information? The tobacco company settlement covered a range of things they must do and put an end to litigation. This is clearly a loophole in the settlement that is being exploited and circumvents the ban on advertising to children (ala Joe Camel). Think about it - DOES ANYBODY WANT THEIR OWN KIDS TO BEGIN SMOKING??? Studio execs, tobacco company execs alike - it's unthinkable this form of advertising continues. How can I help further this cause? Philip Morris spends millions in mailings to convince people things are changing in the tobacco industry - their participation in funding smoking in movies is completely hypocritical. Let's stop it at the source - the funding - then hollywood's addiction to the $$ will diminish, as will their affinity to showing smoking scenes in almost every movie - most of which are contrived and don't fit the scene. I feel extremely strongly about this issue and I'm willing to help. I lost a sister at age 41 who smoked for almost 30 years to lung cancer and lost a parent & grandparent to emphysema. It's time for this to end!

Are there movie stars who refuse to smoke in movies. There are plenty who espouse progressive political causes Susan Sarandon and Robert Redford come to mind, if big enough stars refused to take part in a smoking movie perhaps things would change.

Posted by: Maria on 02/09/06
this is a great website to keep people from smoking even though i already do. i didn't learn from the movies, it is my parents and my friends that give you, as my sister in law says" peer and elder pressure". if u look up to them, u pretty much will do ne for them or with them.

Posted by: Errol E. Povah on 02/11/06
Great site! I only became aware of it after reading an article (in my local [Vancouver, B.C.] newspaper today) entitled, "You can vote on which movies most glamorize smoking." Of the movies listed, I've only seen two of them and, quite frankly, that was so long ago that I don't clearly remember much about the smoking in them. All of that said (and bearing in mind that it's my understanding that your efforts are aimed almost exclusively at the same group that the nicotine cartel targets...kids), my girlfriend and I recently saw Brokeback Mountain...and it's a "smokefest" from beginning to end (I didn't use a stopwatch but I'm sure that less than thirty seconds into the movie, one of the main characters is firing up a butt!)! Coincidentally, the preview that immediately preceded the movie was for "Thank You For Smoking." I haven't seen it yet, but I don't think we should be too quick to judge it. Initially, I thought it would be nothing more than a 2-hour cigarette ad, but I have to say: Based on the very limited info provided by the preview, I sensed that while it's clearly about tobacco, smoking, tobacco executives, etc., they laugh and mock themselves and are, in fact, much more on our side than one might expect. In any case, keep up the great work...and I look forward to finding out who the winners (read, "losers") of the Hackademy Awards are. P.S. I do hope Mel Gibson is honoured somehow. A few years ago, when the effort to ban smoking in movies was in the news, Gibson and Julia Roberts were leaving some movie premiere together...and Gibson was questioned about the smoking ban by an entertainment reporter. He scoffed at it...and suggested that us anti-tobacco people were all idiots, we needed to 'get a life', etc. Sincerely, Errol E. I can appreciate what this website is trying to do; however, it is extremely one sided. I don't think there's some huge conspiracy theory that tobacco lobbyists are paying movie producers and directors to put cigarettes/tobacco smoking in their flicks. It's personal choice on whoever writes the script - this is America, approximately 24% of people smoke. I think these movies are trying to be a little more realistic. A movie scene in a bar - are there smokers in bars in real life? Of course. Hugh Jackman, playing Wolverine, smoking a cigar - it's one of his trademarks. I don't believe kids are so easily influenced into smoking as this website portrays - kids' parents should be their first line of defense. Saying that every other kid is gonna start smoking because they saw it in a movie just insults adolescent's intelligence everywhere. I hope this entry actually makes it in. :) Again - props to this website for bringing smoking AWARENESS to more people.

I liked the quiz. Where was the smoking in Your's,Mine and Ours? I've seen that movie about ten times.

Posted by: Carolyn on 03/21/06
The smoking in Yours, Mine, and Ours is more of an implied smoking incident, with an anti-message all in one. Towards the end of the movie, the character Christina attends a party where she is hit on by her sister's "boyfriend". Enraged that he is trying to cheat on her sister with her she goes to throw a bowl of punch on his head. In that bowl is a large quantity of cigarette butts, which implies teenagers have been smoking at the party. However, upon seeing the cigarette butts she says "eww, gross" and then throws the butts & the punch on his head. Therefore TUTD awarded the movie an overall anti message, but because of the cigarette butts it narrowly missed a pink lung.

Okay, I can already see you people deleting this post into your guestbook, because what else will you do with a voice that doesn't agree with your "cause". My opinion: the people that created this site, must really have to have a lot of free time with which they don't have anything to do. Go clean the house or wash the dishes, better than do this. Honestly, do you think you'll change anything? You know why there are so many smoking scenes in movies? Because although all the talk about sickness, cancer and etc. it still looks good on the screen. I builds climate just like many other things on the screen. As for this webpage, do you really think you can stop teens from smoking? If they'll want to smoke, they'll smoke nomather what you do. I'm 59, I earn about 40 thousand a month, I have my own company and I have a 16 year old daughter that smokes, and from what I know she smokes about 5-7 cigarettes a day. You probably think, why don't I stop her if I know what she's doing? Simple, I'm not a hypocrite. I smoke since I was 17. You probably think that now I have wrinkled skin, yellow teeth and look like I was 80. I'm sorry but I don't. I don't have wrinkles except a few (I never had any plastic surgery, so 1 or 2 are unavoidable at my age), I have white teeth and people say that I look like I was 35 and I definitely don't have lung cancer. My advice to you, creators of this page: GET A LIFE!

Yes, smoking kills. And yes, it shouldn't be glamorized in movies. But no, it shouldn't be removed from movies completely. Movies tell stories about people, life and the world. Some people smoke, so in movies, some people should smoke too. Don't get me wrong, I really hate smoking. Still, we shouldn't convert movies into fairy tales.

Terrible site, you give away the ends of movies (see Disturbia) and you bad mouth perfectly good movies and you steer people away from good movies because they had the gall to smoke in it!!! Who do you people think you are? And no i dont work for a ciggy company, im 15.

I can't believe that you would advise people not to see movies because someone smokes in them!!! So other than the evil little smoking scene, it could be the best movie in the world, but YOU are telling the hundreds of gullible people that visit this site ever day not to go and see it. Personally I think that your site provides people with a biased view and certainly doesn't provide people with accurate movie reviews. Also your facts are wrong, 340 is the 'projected' average. In actual fact about 290 young people die each day from smoking RELATED diseases. No one actually dies from simply having a ciggy. So please, get your facts right before you look silly...

Your facts are wrong. 300 people die from smoking each day, not 300 young people. only 15% of movies feature actors/actresses who are paid to smoke. Also you are telling people not to go and see movies because they have people smoking in them. That is plain stupid. And no I don't work for a tabacco company, I'm 15.

Zach, We aren’t saying that 300 young people die from smoking everyday; we are saying that 300 young people who start smoking everyday will die early because they picked up the habit. The facts are undeniable – tobacco products are very addictive and cause serious health problems, tobacco is not only the number one cause of lung disease in the US, but also the number one preventable cause of death in the US. Even one person dying each day from tobacco use, whether they are young or old, is too many because it can be so easily prevented. Also, it is illegal for tobacco brands to be depicted in movies since the Master Settlement Agreement in 1999. In fact, tobacco companies sometimes tell movie makers to take the brands out of the movies because they don’t want to get in trouble.

Very nice point of view! Respect!

Posted by: Dave on 08/11/07
This is a pretty ridiculous argument, folks. Yes, smoking is an awful addictions, but so are many other things that are portrayed in movies. Where is your indignant protest of the portrayal of SUVs in film? After all, smoking effects the smoker and perhaps a few others, but global warming is a problem that will effect the survival of our entire species.
